On Tuesday, the 5th of December, 2017 , Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, named His Excellency Barry C. Knestout. to serve as the 13th Bishop of Richmond.
Bishop Barry Knestout was ordained a priest of Jesus Christ for the Archdiocese of Washington by His Eminence James Cardinal Hickey on 24 June 1989. During his time as a priest, he served as a priest-secretary to Cardinal Hickey and Cardinal McCarrick in the Archdiocese of Washington, as well as serving as pastor to several parishes of the Archdiocese.
On 18 November 2008, Pope Benedict XVI named Monsignor Knestout to be consecrated as Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, DC. He was consecrated by Archbishop Donald Wuerl on 29 December of the same year.
Bishop Designate Knestout will succeed Bishop Francis Xavier DiLorenzo as Bishop of Richmond. It is noteworthy that the two Bishops, by Providence, share the same Episcopal motto, Christ Our Hope. Bishop Knestout will be installed as the Bishop of Richmond at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in January 2018.
Prayer for our newly named Bishop:
God, eternal shepherd, you tend your Church in many ways and rule us with love. You have chosen your servant, Bishop Barry Knestout, to be a shepherd of your flock. Give him a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care, may he build your Church as a sign of salvation for the world.
